John Worthington has been on the forefront of advancements in the world of media technology for over 20 years. He has held senior level engineering and management positions for many Silicon Valley companies. At Apple Computer, Worthington was the project leader for the development of QuickTime, which kick started the desktop video revolution and has been downloaded over 350 million times. He also developed Apple's MIDI Manager and contributed to the development of the Macintosh Sound Manager and the AIFF file format. Post Apple, Worthington helped pioneer online music sales as Chief Technical Officer at MusicNet and developed desktop video tools for Digital Origin, Media 100, and Discreet. In this video he discusses how computers have allowed artists to create their own music very inexpensively and how the internet has become the perfect distribution medium.

Worthington maintains an active creative career as a media artist and musician. He's performed in North America, Europe, and Japan. His current works feature the Gizmotron, an instrument of his own design that controls a network of computers creating soundscapes and visual imagery. As a producer and engineer, Worthington has released several CDs featuring prominent New Orleans musicians on his Lakefront Digital label. Worthington is a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, and the Audio Engineering Society. He has been with the College of Music faculty since 2005.
