Brian Shepard is Assistant Professor of Composition at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School. He is a specialist in pedagogical technology, and as such is heavily involved in leveraging the potential of emerging technologies such as Internet2 to open up new horizons in music education. He is also a working composer who explores the field of interactive, spontaneously composed music expressed through technology and dance.

Brian Shepard of the University of Southern California argues that a successful musician (or music businessperson) is a well-rounded musician or music businessperson, and discusses fields that ambitious people might consider learning something about if they are to maximize their chances of success in their chosen career. He also assesses the skillsets of the students that he encounters at USC, and whether they come to USC already well-rounded.
