Terry McBride of Nettwerk on “Collapsing Copyright” and the Music Industry’s New Paradigm

Terry McBride
Terry McBride is co-founder and CEO of Nettwerk Productions, the largest independent record label in Canada. Since its inception in 1984, McBride has grown Nettwerk into a diversified artist services empire, encompassing Nettwerk Records (a record label), Nettwerk Management (an artist management firm), Nettwerk Music Publishing, Nettmedia (a web and digital media enterprise), and Artwerks (a graphic arts and fashion design house). To date, Nettwerk releases have sold more than 100 million copies worldwide. McBride was also one of the creators of the Lilith Fair, a pioneering all-female performer concert tour that enjoyed great success for several years in the late 1990s.

Description:

Terry McBride, founder and CEO of Nettwerk Music Group, shares his views on the business model he believes is the future of the music industry – in specific, a state of “collapsing copyright” in which one entity controls all three of an artists’ saleable assets (publishing, recordings, and likeness) and therefore can leverage all three assets at once to develop an artists’ career. He then illustrates his argument with stories taken from Nettwerk’s own roster of artists, and shows how this new paradigm could transform the entire process by which consumers find and obtain music.
