Erica Muhl
Erica Muhl is a Professor of Composition at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California. Her compositions have been commissioned or played by organizations such as Minnesota Opera, Cleveland Chamber Symphony, Italy's Orchestra della RAI, Venezuela's Orquesta Filharmonica Nacional, National Public Radio, and many more. Her music has been featured in festivals worldwide, and she has been the recipient of grants and awards from such organizations as the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the National Endowment for the Arts, and has received the prestigious Whitaker Commissioning Prize.

Erica Muhl, a Professor of Composition at the USC Thornton School of Music, introduces herself and discusses many aspects of composing and conducting music – the importance of learning the history and theory of music, why having a mentor can be good for your career, the attraction of composing for film and television, how to respect the composers wishes as a conductor, why teaching composition makes you a better composer, and most of all, what it takes to succeed in the demanding field of music composition.
