Eduardus Halim, a concert pianist and Professor of piano at New York University’s Steinhardt School, discusses how he evaluates a piano he is playing for the first time, and explains the connections between the emotional and intangible factors (color, feel, tone) that pianists tend to use in their evaluations, and the actual physical and technical properties that a piano technician would find in the same instrument.
