In this 2007 symposium on teaching composition to young students, Timo Klemettinen, Managing Director of the Association of Finnish Music Schools, discusses his Association’s Composers-in-Residence Progra,m, which aims to introduce students in Finland’s music schools to contemporary music and the people that write it. He discusses the parameters and goals of the program, and answers audience questions on music pedagogy and the challenges and rewards of teaching young people about contemporary music.

Then, Ted Wiprud, Director of Education for the New York Philharmonic discusses the Philharmonic's Very Young Composer's Program and School Partnership Program. He discusses how the programs function, the pedagogical techniques involved and the goals that the Philharmonic hopes to achieve, and then answers audience questions on the topics of early childhood music pedagogy and the operational challenges of instituting programs of this kind.
