Bob Brookmeyer and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra rehearsal at the Manhattan School of Music
Bob Brookmeyer
Multi-instrumentalist, composer, educator, and groundbreaking arranger Bob Brookmeyer has had a long and varied career in the jazz world. Long considered one of the finest valve trombonists in the world, Brookmeyer has recorded with Coleman Hawkins, Pee Wee Russell, Gerry Mulligan, Charles Mingus, and enjoyed a fifteen-year collaboration with Stan Getz. Also a formidable pianist, he has performed two-piano dates with the great Bill Evans. As a member of the Jimmy Giuffre Three in the late 1950s, Brookmeyer was among the first musicians to explore free improvisation as a staple of live performance. Since the 1980s, Brookmeyer has been active in America and Europe as an arranger, composer, conductor and educator. He has started a school in the Netherlands teaching improvisation and composition, founded the New Art Orchestra, for which he continues to write and arrange new music, and currently chairs the Jazz Composition department at the New England Conservatory in Boston, MA. |
