Learning Improvisation
Learning ImprovisationDan Rosenboom is a student majoring in music performance at Cal Arts. He talks about his improvisation background. Rosenboom explains that the only way to learn improvisation is by doing it. He started improvisation with his first trumpet teacher, Wadada Leo Smith. However, he ended up moving more into classical music. After playing in an orchestra in Germany, he discovered that it was too restrictive a lifestyle. Therefore, Rosenboom began to focus on improvisation. He explains that one cannot think about improvisation. He also suggests playing with other musicians to practice.
