Even as new technologies change the industry, one thing remains constant: in order to succeed in just about any type of music, you must have a great live show. You must connect emotionally with an audience. If you do this, your chances of success grow exponentially, and you can really leverage the new technologies to accelerate your career. If you don't have a great live show and connect emotionally, none of the technology will do you much good over the long-term.

Once you've built up a local following, the next step is to expand your base, by getting out of town. Too often artists tour with no real strategy; they simply take whatever gig they can get away from town, figuring that the simple fact that they're leaving their home town somehow validates their career. The reality is that if you don't tour strategically and efficiently, maximizing every gig, you will quickly face diminishing returns, and you'll have a harder and harder time booking gigs.
