Timo Klemettinen, Managing Director, Association of Finnish Music Schools gives an overview of music education in Finland at the Learning Overtures: Finland Symposium.

In this 2007 symposium on teaching composition to young students, Timo Klemettinen, Managing Director of the Association of Finnish Music Schools, discusses his Association’s Composers-in-Residence Progra,m, which aims to introduce students in Finland’s music schools to contemporary music and the people that write it. He discusses the parameters and goals of the program, and answers audience questions on music pedagogy and the challenges and rewards of teaching young people about contemporary music.

Then, Ted Wiprud, Director of Education for the New York Philharmonic discusses the Philharmonic's Very Young Composer's Program and School Partnership Program. He discusses how the programs function, the pedagogical techniques involved and the goals that the Philharmonic hopes to achieve, and then answers audience questions on the topics of early childhood music pedagogy and the operational challenges of instituting programs of this kind.

This is the opening session for Learning Overtures: Finland at New York University. The Chorus of Sibelius Senior High School begins the session with a musical greeting, followed by a welcome from Dr. Lawrence Ferrara and an overview of music education in Finland by speaker Timo Klimettinen.
