Historically, the industry responded too late to the Napster pirating mentality which considerably eroded profit margins. Apple's iTunes, to a great extent, saved the day. Mr. Suarez points out that because profits are the bottom line, many new artists are overlooked because they are considered too risky. Today, most labels prefer artists who have proven themselves to be profitable.
