What does the RIAA do?

By: Keith Hatschek

The Recording Industry Association of America (www.riaa.com) is the advocacy group that represents the major record labels in Washington, DC. Their role is to lobby Congress to enact and strengthen the copyrights that generate revenues for record labels. Their website has useful data found by clicking on “Facts and Figures” on the home page. The RIAA tracks prerecorded music sales by format and updates their charts twice a year. A look at the most recent sales statistics shows the rapid growth of legal downloads and ringtone sales.
