Gigs Outside Your Home Town
George Howard

As your local popularity grows, you will need to start expanding your base. In this manner, you will go from gigging to touring. We’ll talk more about touring shortly, but for now, the message is that you should start working in ever-expanding circles radiating out from your home-base club. For example, if you are an artist whose home-base is Philly, and you’ve developed a good following at a couple of venues, start looking for similar type venues that are within driving distance. From Philly, the obvious choices would be New York City or Washington DC, as major cities with venues that cater to the type of music you make. That said, choose the right venue rather than what you believe to be the right city. Yes, if you can make it in NYC, you most likely can make it anywhere, but you will have a better chance succeeding there if you’ve developed a fan-base and compelling live show before you've arrived. This may mean playing college towns or coffeehouses in the more rural areas, or house parties, or whatever. Follow the music and follow the same protocol for the out-of-town shows that you did for the home town shows - alerting local media, collecting names for your mailing list, and so on. You will soon be developing a touring circuit.
