| Do We Really Need a Reason?
by: Debbie Cavalier
John J. Mahlmann, executive director of the National Association for Music Education, was recently quoted in the Washington Post as saying he is tired of having to defend the importance of music education. He often finds it necessary to rattle off statistics about how music improves the lives of people who study it. The sheer joy of playing and understanding music isn't enough, he said.
So he has an unorthodox response to educators: "Why is math so high on the priority list?"

| 5 Things the Music Business Has Going for it in 2008
by: Ben Snyder
Now that the holidays are over, the new iPod's unwrapped and all the family’s mp3 collections have been combined and shared now's not the time to focus on RIAA lawsuits, slumping record sales, or whether downloading a torrent of "In Rainbows" from Radiohead from The Pirate Bay for free rather than from their site for free constitutes copyright infringement. Here are 5 things the music business can look forward to in 2008 that might change their fortunes for the better....

| The Trouble with the Future of Radio
by: Mike King
It’s likely no surprise to hear that the amount of money and resources it takes to get your music played on commercial radio (those that are broadcasting for profit), during peak listening times makes it an unrealistic avenue for almost all independent artists and labels. I would argue that there are plenty of more effective outlets for the $250,000 you’ll need to spend on indie radio promoters, $50,000 on the necessary trade ads, and $50,000 on...

| NYU Jazz Master Class series
by: John Snyder
Artists House is please to announce the release of the NYU Jazz Master Class series, produced by yours truly and David Schroeder of NYU. Each of the eight titles in the series is several hours long, several approaching 5 hours of content. The idea was suggested to me several years ago by my friends Nancy Harrow and Jan Krukowski and it gradually took shape and over the past few years, we...

| School of Rock, Little-Steven Style
by: Debbie Cavalier
Steven Van Zandt says rock 'n' roll saved his life. Now he wants to return the favor. The E Street Band guitarist and Sopranos star created the non-profit Rock and Roll Forever Foundation last year, as a vehicle to preserve the music that so shaped his life.
On December 2, 2007, he unveiled the foundation's first project: a ...

| I'm Glad I Don't Run a Major Label
by: Ben Snyder
It's a bad time to a major record label. First, eMarketer is out with a report predicting that worldwide spending on music will decrease from $31.8 billion in 2006 to $26.2 billion in 2011, a decrease of nearly 20 percent.
In comments made at the GSMA Mobile Asia Congress on Novembe...

| On The Corner
by: Mike King
I’m loving the promo video that Sony made to support the Miles Davis On The Corner box set (the 8th, and last, in an incredible series of high-end sets designed for Miles completists). The 12 minute video, which Sony has provided to Amazon to help sell the $140 set, contains footage from Miles’s On The Corner band playing in Vienna in 1973, as well as a recent interview with the core members of that band (bassist Michael Henderson, guitarist Pete Cosey and alto sax player Dave Liebman) in...

| Can AMWAY Save the Music Business?
by: Ben Snyder
I have a confession to make. I once ran an Amway business. I know what you’re thinking… and you’re right. But I was young, in college, and I needed the money.
Amway, for those of you who haven’t heard about the multi-level marketing wonder, Amway is a company that gives financial incentives to people who buy the Amway kit (their “business”) and then sell to others or get others to open their own Amway business. Friends and family members of an Amway business owner will ...
